There is no food on Christmas Day, so our kitchen team can spend it with their families, but the bar is open from 12pm to 3pm if you would like to come down for a festive drink. We are back open as normal on Boxing Day. For a work party or a big group, call us on 01433 650225: up to 35 can sit together.

The Little John is a village pub, dining room and place to stay on Station Road in Hathersage, in the Derbyshire Peak District. It has been part of the village since 1863 and reopened in spring 2026 after a full refurbishment of the pub. It has eight en-suite bedrooms, two self-catering cottages, cask ale on the bar and a kitchen working with farms, butchers and bakeries across the valley.
The refurbishment was never about turning the Little John into something else. The oak stayed. The fires stayed. So did the pool table, the dartboard and the seat by the window that somebody always seems to be in. What changed was everything around them: the dining room, the kitchen, the cellar and the care taken over all three.
It is still the village local. Walkers come off the moor and drink alongside people who have lived here forty years. Dogs sleep under the tables. And upstairs, there is somewhere to stay.

Our menus are built from what is around us. That is not a marketing line. It is a delivery round.
Beef and pork from Harrington's. Eggs, milk and cream from Middleton Dairies and Watson's Farm at Hope. Bread from Peveril Stores in Castleton and Roses in Sheffield.
Behind the bar it is the same story. Cask ale from Abbeydale, spirits from Shivering Mountain Distillery, coffee roasted by Castleton Coffee Co. down the road, and a wine list supplied by Vintners on the Brook, who are, quite literally, next door.
Whether you're stopping by after a walk across the moors or settling in by the fire, we hope you feel at home here.

Somewhere to stay,
not just somewhere to sleep
The Little John has eight en-suite bedrooms above the pub and two self-catering cottages alongside it. Rooms are bed and breakfast; the cottages are self-catering and suit longer stays. Most rooms are dog friendly, parking is free, and Hathersage station is a two-minute walk for trains to Sheffield and Manchester.
People who stay here are rarely only here for the bed. They are here for Stanage Edge at first light, for the walk down to the river, for Castleton and Chatsworth and the long way round. The pub is what you come back down to.

A village in the Hope Valley with a gritstone edge above it, a river below it, and Little John buried in the churchyard up the lane.
Little John's grave
Robin Hood's lieutenant is buried in St Michael's churchyard, a few minutes' walk up the hill. The pub is named after him, and the oak and arrows on our sign come from the same story.

Stanage Edge, Higger Tor and Padley Gorge are all within a morning's walk of the front door, and every one of them ends better with a pint back at the bar.
