The Little John (LJ's) in Hathersage provides an ideal base for outdoor activities, whether it's climbing, walking, biking/cycling, fell running or caving. The village boasts several outdoor shops catering for all your needs whether you simply require walking accessories such as boots or weather protection systems manufactured by market leaders including Arcteryx, Paramo, Patagonia, North Face, Berghaus etc; or just incase you forgot your DMM Micro Nuts for that route you've been thinking about, everything is here and only a minutes walk from LJ's.
Climbing
The climbing around Hathersage is well documented; but just in case your're new to the area, climbs of all grades from easy to the ones were if you don't break a leg falling off, then you will be met by men in white coats waiting to take you away can be found at nearly all venues. Depending on what floats your boat, be it God's own rock or the white stuff, here's a brief run down of a few of the crags in the area:-

Grit Stanage EdgeBurbage North, South and Quarries Millstone Edge Froggat Edge Curbar Edge Gardoms Edge Birchins Edge Rivelin Edge Chatsworth Edge Black Rocks Wharncliffe Cratcliffe Tor The Roaches |
Limestone Stoney Middleton |
For the traditionalists out there, some of these crags are within walking distance, however, all can be reached easily by car. Nb. some of these (notably The Roaches, High Tor and Wharncliffe) are up to 1 hours drive away. During the summer months a bus service (284) runs to Sheffield and back (check the internet for a timetable) via Denis Knoll car park (access to High Neb on Stanage), Stanage Popular end and Burbage North.
If you'd just rather go bouldering then don't worry, there's more than enough in the Hathersage area. Perhaps the best of these are to be found at Stanage Plantation, Stanage Trig, Burbage North, Burbage (south) Boulders, Gardoms, Curbar, Cratcliffe/Robin Hoods Stride and the Secret Garden.
Oh yeh and don't forget, if the weather is somewhat inclement, again don't panic! There are several climbing/bouldering walls in Sheffield, including The Foundry, The Edge, The Works and The Matrix. All of these can be reached by either car, bus (272) or the train from Hathersage.

Walking
As with climbing, Hathersage offers a perfect base for walking whether you just fancy a short stroll before breakfast or lunch, or a day long trek before returning to the pub for a few drinks and an evening meal.
If you choose the right route, you can be in open countryside within 2-3 minutes of leaving the pub, other walks will require a short (10-15 minute) on pavements before you're away from the roads. The best approach is to ensure that you have the correct OS map with you, prudence would dictate that you have both the Dark and White Peak 2.5" to 1 mile maps available as some walks cross between the two.
It would be difficult to even attempt to describe all the possible walks in the surrounding area, there is such a wide choice. Many walks can start and end in the village, or you may want to walk somewhere and get a bus/train back especially if you're thinking about Loose Hill, Hollins Cross, Mam Tor or Kinder. Alternatively, if you have a car you can drive to a starting point and do a circular walk from there.
Outside of
the Hope Valley, you can be in Lathkill Dale, Monsal Dale, Cressbrook
Dale and on the Limestone Way within 20-30 mins by car.
